What does one crave for the most during summers, beside ice cream? A vacation.
And what better place to have a vacation than near a bright blue beach!
We were pretty lucky this time to be able to squeeze in a trip to Maui in our budget. Needless to say, the trip was amazing. The weather was really pleasant which allowed us to explore the area comfortably. We stayed at the Marriott Maui Ocean Club at Kaanapali beach. The beach and the property both were gorgeous and close to a lot of attractions. The Whaler's Village was just at a five minutes walk and the Banyan Tree Park was a short drive from there. We gave the famous helicopter ride a miss but did go canoeing and snorkeling with Hawaiian Paddle Sports. However, as on most holidays, we actually spent most of our time on the beach and in the pool.
It was a six-day trip and as compared to my previous trips, I packed really light this time. This was quite easy owing to the fact that it was the beach (wink)(wink). Apart from swimwear, I packed two shorts, four super-light tops and a maxi-dress all of which served as both day-outfits and cover-ups. For the nights, I just packed three formal outfits but ended up using only one. I went easy on the shoes too as I chucked away all the heels and packed just a pair each of the flip-flops and the beach sandals. I wore my sneakers on the flight which saved me a lot of baggage space. I managed to tuck in my beach bag in the carry on baggage while I carried my regular big purse.
And now for some beach travel tips (lessons I learnt, the hard way, over the years) :
- Go easy on the dressier outfits and focus on light beach wear. You will keep going into the water multiple times a day and will need cover-ups far more than your LBDs.
- Pack two pairs of sunglasses. The cheaper ones for the water activities and the expensive ones for the fancier times.
- We all of course remember the sunscreen lotions/sprays but we usually forget the sunscreen lip balm. I made the same mistake and as a result my lips are tanned beyond recognition now.
- Carry some light, fun beach jewelry to pair with your swimwear. Make sure it is inexpensive so that it doesn't hurt too bad even if you lose it under water.
Last but not the least, have fun!
